North Carolina's Republican state auditor has made appointments to a new State Board of Elections because an appeals court said a law can still be enforced while it is challenged by Democratic Gov.

A North Carolina appeals court has ruled that a law stripping the governor's authority to appoint State Board of Elections members can take effect for now.

North Carolina trial judges have struck down an attempt by Republican state lawmakers to shift power away from the governor to the state auditor. The change would have taken away Democratic Gov. Josh Stein's ability to appoint members of the State Board of Elections and pass that power to Republican State Auditor Dave Boliek.

North Carolina trial judges will soon rule if legislative Republicans' latest method to attempt to wrest control of the State Board of Elections from a Democratic governor is lawful. A three-judge panel listened to arguments Monday in a lawsuit filed by Gov. Josh Stein against GOP lawmakers.

When Gov. Josh Stein took office in January, he inherited the fallout from one of the worst natural disasters in the state鈥檚 history. The estimated $60 billion recovery from Hurricane Helene has been Stein鈥檚 鈥渢op priority as governor,鈥� the Democrat told Carolina Public Press. His initial days in office have shown it.

North Carolina鈥檚 legislature passed more than $1 billion with two Helene recovery funding bills in October, but by mid-February, about two-thirds of that money still hadn鈥檛 been spent.

State Budget Director Kristin Walker鈥檚 team of economists have run the numbers of various revenue scenarios 鈥� and she says all of them lead to a 鈥渇iscal cliff" where the state sees a major budget shortfall in the coming years.

New North Carolina Democratic Gov. Josh Stein wants Republicans in charge of the legislature to roll back upcoming income tax cuts and scale back private school vouchers that expanded dramatically recently.

After weeks of deliberations at the state legislature, another round of Helene recovery funding has been signed into law.
