The often-heated debate puts transgender athletes at the center of an issue without a clear middle ground.

North Carolina's House speaker says the legislature won鈥檛 advance legislation preventing transgender girls and women from competing in school sports labeled for biologically female athletes.

Republican sponsors have named it the "Save Women鈥檚 Sports Act鈥� and the point is fair play, but critics say it violates transgender girls' rights.

The state House measure filed this week comes as legislators in nearly 30 other states have proposed similar prohibitions. At least two states have passed laws.
